PUIG DE MISSA
Declared a site of scenic beauty by the Ministry of Culture in 1952, a BIC in 1985 (Site of cultural and historical interest), and as a historical monument in 2002
The church, built in the 16th century as part of the island’s defences, was a centrepiece for the construction of the first houses in the town in the following century. One of these houses is currently used as the Ethnological museum of Ibiza and Formentera.
CHURCH OF MARE DE DÉU DE JESÚS
Built by two Franciscans at the end of the 15th century as a convent. Nowadays it is part of the town of Jesús, but was originally designed to serve the ‘cult of seafarers’ living outside the walls of Ibiza city. The altarpiece depicting the nativity of la Mare de Déu de Jesús, a work of Los Osona, is a gem, in the transitional style between gothic and renaissance painting. Period: end of the 15th century.
CHURCH OF SANTA GERTRUDIS DE FRUITERA
Completed in 1797, this is unique in having the largest belfry of all the islands (1899). Its current façade has been added to several times since it was first built, additions probably made before 1890. The presbyter still conserves the original wooden altarpiece with its modern image of Santa Gertrudis. Period: End of the 18th century.
CHURCH OF SANT CARLES DE PERALTA
Built at the end of the18th century, this has one of the most outstanding columned porches in the island. The surrounding area was an area of great natural beauty, and was much praised by the Archduke Luis Salvador, but is now highly developed. The confessional inside is probably from the 19th century. Period: 18th century.
S´ARGAMASSA ACUEDUCT
Very close to S´Argamassa is a 425 metre long stone wall, with water channels along the top. This was certainly part of the industrial infrastructure for the production of salted fish (1st and 2nd century AD). A villa, yet to be excavated, could be one of the stores in which garum, a preserve popular among seafarers in the ancient Mediterranean, was made. The channel can still be seen several metres out to sea, crossing a rock which is now a reef. Period: 1st century roman.
