HISTORY OF THE FIESTAS
THE ORIGIN OF THE FIESTA ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF MAY
A fiesta that stands out for its majesty in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu is held in the village on the first Sunday of May.
In the past, there was a magnificent show with a large number of decorated floats, as well as men and women decked out in their typical outfits coming from the most diverse places on the island, coming together on this special day in the Villa del Río, to celebrate this festival.
They would say: anam a maig with great enthusiasm at the beginning of the festivities and venim de maig, pronounced with dejection and weariness after the parties had finished.
If we want to seek the origins of the fiesta, we will have to turn to the legend that exists about the same. We know all legends hold agrain of truth, and it is thus good for us to remember them.
There is a small hill to the side of Ses Estaques that has been known as S"Església Vella since time immemorial. They say it has this name because the first church was on its summit (clearly, it was not like one of those seen today, but rather a small simple chapel or hermitage).
One day after the faithful had finished receiving mass here, and after leaving, they heard a huge thundering, and saw that the church had collapsed and the walls had fallen down along with the bell, over the cliff and to the bottom of the sea. The fact that the collapse happened after every last person had already left the church, was interpreted as a miracle by the town and since they say this event took place on the first Sunday of May, since then, every year this festival has been celebrated. The legend also says that on stormy nights, boats passing nearby can hear the ringing of the bell from the bottom of the sea, warning sailors of the proximity of the coast and the danger they are in.
Whoever has had the chance, has been able to see for themselves the mystery and magic shrouding this small hill called the Església Vella and we are also certain that the first inhabitants of the village discovered its charm as well.
